The race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday came down to fuel mileage, and thanks to an extra trip down pit road during the final caution period of the race, David Ragan and the UPS team were able to make it to the end of the 400-mile race and finished in 15th.
David started the race 23rd and was quickly able move up one position at a time. He flew into the top 20 without difficulty, and maintained spots inside of the top 15 for almost the entire race.
“We got good fuel mileage with our UPS Ford, that helped out,” said David after the race. “Those couple of cautions there in the middle part of the race, I struggled on the restarts and lost a lot of track position. I felt like at times that we had a top-eight car, but we just needed some long runs. It was good to get some long runs in at the beginning.”
The UPS pit crew was on its game this weekend, earning multiple spots in the pits. At one point, David came into the pits in 10th place, and the team gained him five spots, putting him back out on the track in fifth.
“Our UPS team was really good in the pits today, I’m proud of them,” continued David. “We made good adjustments. We were strong at times, we’ve just got to keep looking at the good runs and keep building on them.”
David has a busy week coming up before heading out to Infineon Raceway. He will participate in a test in the early part of the week and then head to Sonoma on Wednesday for a media event to preview next weekend’s first road-course race of the season.
