Trackside with Greg Mayer

Greg Mayer at Kansas Speedway after the race on Sunday

Greg Mayer at Kansas Speedway

This past weekend at Kansas Speedway, Greg Mayer was part of the UPS Trackside Services team. Greg took some time on Sunday to talk with UPS Racing about what he does both at and away from the track.

I have been with UPS for 10 years, and I work in business development. Working for UPS Trackside Services during the race weekend in Kansas is enjoyable because it’s fascinating to see the power of the brand at work. It’s amazing how many doors it can open with just the power of the brand.

Coming out to the track is also a nice change of pace and it’s good to be out representing the company. I grew up a racing fan, so it’s neat to see everything going on behind-the-scenes in the garage area and around the track.

When I’m not working with UPS, I enjoy golfing and farming.

Greg Emmer is a mechanic for the No. 6 UPS team. Before heading to Atlanta for this weekend’s race, Greg took some time to talk with UPS Racing about his job at Roush Fenway Racing.

How did you get into the sport? I’ve always loved racing since I was a little kid. I moved to North Carolina from Wisconsin in July of 2004 to look for a job. My first job was with Mike Harmon Racing as a mechanic. I was there a year and then changed jobs and started with the Wood Brothers as a Shock guy. I didn’t make the move to Roush until May of 2006 and I’ve been here ever since. This is my third season on the No. 6 team.

What’s your favorite part about being on a NASCAR team? Being able to travel and go to the track every weekend.

What’s the coolest thing that you’ve gotten to do since being a member of the No. 6 team? Watching David progress over the years, from his first Cup race in Dover in 2006 up until now.

What’s your normal “run of show” during the week? I work in the shop preparing the cars for the upcoming weekend.

What are your normal responsibilities once arriving to the track each weekend? Getting the car through the tech line, making changes during practice and getting the car set up for the race.

What are you responsible for during the actual race? During the race I’m in charge of the pit sign so David knows where to stop; I also pull the front hose and help with tires after each pit stop.

Anything significant about the upcoming weekend? Atlanta is UPS’s hometown, so we’ve all got extra incentive to get a good finish for them.

If you weren’t working in racing, what do you think you would be doing? I would be back home on the dairy farm.

Where did you grow up? Slinger, Wisconsin

What’s your favorite thing to do on an off-weekend? Go four-wheeling, hang out with friends and catch up on house work

Something interesting about yourself? I like to work on old tractors
